Nick Aiken
Nick is a highly experienced and award-winning* urban planner-designer with more than 30 years-experience.
As a multi-disciplinary professional Nick has an exceptional 30+ year career in New Zealand and the United Kingdom, working for both private and public sector clients and employers. Prior to establishing VisionUrban, Nick was WSP’s National Technical Director for Planning and/or lead for the Planning and Urban Design disciplines from 2013 to 2019. He has been a NZTA-Waka Kotahi IPA for RMA Planning, Chair of the Central North Island Branch of NZPI since 2016, is a practising RMA Hearings Commissioner (CHAIR), and sat on the Aotearoa New Zealand Urban Design Forum national committee between 2014-2018.
Resource Consents
Nick has an exceptional 30+ year career-spanning success rate of 100% in relation to all applications for resource consent and designations, and decision-making on resource consents. His resource consent experience extends across greenfield and brownfield developments from low to high-rise very high density and mixed use, social housing, town centres, shopping malls and precincts, major multimodal infrastructure, airports, large subdivisions, pathway networks, international tourist attractions, heritage precincts, bridge and pathway infrastructure, and parks.
Planning Policy and Strategy (Plan Changes, Structure and Precinct Plans, Strategic Plans)
He also has a record of success in Policy and Strategic Planning, with lead roles in high profile Plan Reviews, Plan Drafting, Masterplans, Structure Plans, Precinct Plans, Walking-Cycling Strategies/Plans, land development multi-criteria analysis (MCA), and long-term strategic Visioning projects.
Urban Design and CPTED
His Urban Design and CPTED extends from optioneering through concept and developed design and to post design and construction audits. It includes greenfield and brownfield developments for low to high-rise very high density and mixed use, social housing, subdivisions, town centres, shopping malls and precincts, major multimodal infrastructure, airports, pathway networks, bridge and pathway infrastructure, parks, waterfront developments, education and health campuses, and targeting crime blackspots (CPTED).
RMA Commissioner
Certified since 2005, Nick has acted in a Chair capacity for a number of RMA hearings in the central North Island, sitting alone or as Chair on a Hearings Committee.

Supporting Our Community

VisionUrban is proud to take the opportunity to support the community and our future generations. In addition to supporting and designing great projects, VisionUrban has since 2021 supported:
- a local high school sports team in local and inter-region competition,
- school cultural activities in a national competition,
- a cancer charity (donations and awareness-raising), and
- contributing financial support to a local swimming athlete competing at the disabled 2022 Commonwealth Games (Australia) and 2023 Olympics (France).
